The Royal Lodge for the Sultan of Kedah is located within the 99 Degrees East Master Plan Development of 700 acres on the island of Langkawi, Malaysia. The master plan is designed around two championship golf courses with the Lodge located within an exclusive, heavily forested 10 acre site. The accommodation is positioned on the top of a knoll and is orientated to the east within the woodland to maximise the long distant views across the forest, the mountains beyond and the horizon of the distant Andaman Sea. The public approach from the west to the complex is protected both visually and physically by a series of sliding walls whilst the east side is fully glazed providing the Sultan, his family and guests uninterrupted views across the secluded landscaped garden, forest scape and distant vistas. The plan reflects the needs of protocol and security whilst providing a family home. Planned principally on one level for ease of use, the layout is divided into a number of functional blocks. They comprise the Royal entertainment suite and the Sultan and family’s private living areas which give access to the gardens and pool. Kitchen service area, staff accommodation and security services are located separately.
